Yes, Book of the Dead marks the return of Cornwell's most popular character, Dr Kay Scarpetta, but more than this, with her latest release Cornwell has created a heart pounding, gripping and altogether fascinating read that will appeal not only to crime lovers.

While Scarpetta has dealt with some fairly gruesome and challenging cases before, those she faces in Book of the Dead are perhaps more confounding than all previous ones. Scarpetta opens her forensics lab in the South and before long she's called upon to help solve a murder in Rome. But there soon emerge links to the death of a small local boy and a close encounter with a familiar and terrifying pattern of events.
